Artist Philosophy

“The mental elements that make up the object are deconstructed, that is, taken away from their original structure and used freely, in search of an order connected to the thought-object, in as much as it is form. Thought, which shapes itself in form, seeks at the same time to emancipate itself in order to escape the control of the individual psyche, approaching pure consciousness.”

PROJECT “ 40 YEARS, 40 ARTISTS “
THE UNEQUIVOCAL WORK OF BERNARDO MASSIMO SCODITTI
The work of Bernardo Massimo Scoditti ( born 1952 ) has its place in time and in the space of
the paper and the sumptuousness of its geometry and attention to detail. Lines, circles and small
blotches are repeated symmetrically and hermetically on the monochrome background,
challenging our vision and perception, pushing us forward towards the technique of design, in
preparation for the pictorial and representative. It seems like a return to the Renaissance and
we feel the umbilical connection between Art, Science and Spirituality. The work of this Italian
Artist overflows with virtuosity; it has multiple and equivocal interpretations gradually
revealed by the light and the passing of time. With nothing but graphite and Indian ink,
sometimes watercolour, on paper. Always paper. Often the work occupies both sides in a
double and complementary formal narrative. Paper as a background , for bidimensionality,
which is nearer to Nature. The line advances at a fixed rhythm, in exact conformity with the
order of the composition, both interior and exterior. Symmetry is there, but there is also a
slight irregularities in the small universes that sometimes appear, and for which attention is
required in their deciphering. The work which makes up the collection for the Cerveira
Foundation Art Biennial, with its varied technique on paper measuring 100 x 100 cm is a case
in point. It dates from 1997 when it was awarded the Acquisition Prize at the IX International
Biennial of Art in Cerveira.

Bernardo Massimo Scoditti studied in Rome at the Academy of Architecture and Academy of
Fine Arts. At the beginning of the 1980’s he was already in Portugal. His first individual
exhibition in Portugal in 1981 was organised by Jaime Isidoro ( 1924 – 2009 ) at the Tempo
Gallery in Lisbon, and the second, also by Jaime Isidoro, was held in 1984 at the Dois Gallery ,
accompanied by a text by Edgardo Xavier. In 1997, Jaime Isidoro organized another individual
exhibition at the Dois Gallery, this time with a text by Fernando Lanhas. Thanks to the
development of this relationship, the Artist initiated his contribution to the Cerveira
International Art Biennial, where he exhibited in 1984, 1986, 1992 and 1997 ( when he won
the award ).The work of the Artist from Mesagne, in the Brindisi Region of Southern Italy, is
Unique in the panorama of contemporary art; it doesn’t conform to any familiar tendencies or
styles; it has the stamp of the classical drawing and painting studies which contribute
essentially to what we see and discover. Intention and reason are everything, though
measured in retreat from the world and concentration on plastic and pictorial action. In his
curriculum, Bernardo Massimo Scoditti has dozens of individual and collective exhibitions, in
Spain, Portugal and Italy ; his work is also to be found in relevant public and
private collections. He is an artist to be discovered through calm contemplation.
